Some people call it Universal Design. Others call it Lifespan Design, or Design for all Ages. Whatever title you wish to give it…it can be appreciated by everybody because it is about designing homes that meet the diverse needs of everyone…in all stages of life.
Many Universal Design features are standard design and building concepts and elements that are placed or sized differently, such as entrances without steps which make it easier for people of all ages to enter the home, whether pushing a baby stroller or carrying groceries. Wider hallways and doorways are more convenient, enhance interior circulation and easily accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. Lever door handles are easier to use than round knobs, especially by parents carrying infants and a person of any age with grasping difficulty such as arthritis. Larger no-step entry showers that makes ease-of-use and entry easier for everyone. Light switches and electrical outlets are located at heights more convenient and accessible to both youngsters and seniors A raised dishwasher will facilitate use without causing unnecessary back stress and possible injury. Better glare-free, "Energy Star" ambient and task lighting makes daily chores easier to perform while saving energy and greatly improving safety. Selection of easy-to-clean and maintain finish materials and surfaces will make housecleaning much easier and quicker.
The home incorporating Universal Design features will accommodate the needs of many different people with varying levels of ability. These features when incorporated into the design of the home will increase its worth and enhance its beauty and function, while maximizing safe and independent living for everyone…through ALL stages of life!
Universal Design features cost little or no more than standard features, save energy, simplify housekeeping, maximize independent living…and are all but "invisible". Applying these principles now will ensure that the results will not only be satisfying today… but far into the future!
